"I was lucky enough to attend Caseville Public Schools, which although very small in size, had a great journalism program and student newspaper," Hessling said. Hessling said her interest in journalism began at a young age, and was fueled by various mentors, starting with her high school journalism teacher. Hessling has received many individual journalism awards over her career, most recently winning this year's award for best editorial writing from the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors.

She accepted a reporting position at the Huron Daily Tribune near the end of her senior year at CMU, and moved up the ranks at that paper, first as assistant news editor in 2012, then as editor in 2017.ĭuring her time at the Huron Daily Tribune, the newspaper has received numerous journalism accolades, including consecutive nominations for the Michigan Press Association Newspaper of the Year in its class. During her time at CMU, she served many roles including managing editor of the school's student newspaper, CM Life. Hessling graduated with a bachelor's of degree in journalism from Central Michigan University.
